Arunachal Pradesh is India's far eastern edge, and it stays genuinely off the beaten track. People translate its name as "land of the dawn-lit mountains", and it is a big, thinly travelled state of high passes, deep valleys, Buddhist monasteries, and more than two dozen tribes. Fewer tourists make it out here, which is exactly the point. It takes more planning than its neighbours, permits included, but the payoff is real.

    Why go to Arunachal Pradesh

This one is for travellers who will trade a little comfort for something more raw. You move from the snowy heights around Tawang to the green rice terraces of Ziro, and the cultures are just as varied: Monpa, Apatani, Nyishi, Adi, each with their own food and festivals. Because tourism is still finding its feet here, a lot of the state feels unhurried and unpolished, in a good way.

    Places worth visiting in Arunachal

    • Tawang: Home to one of the largest Buddhist monasteries anywhere, set high near the Tibetan border. The journey up is part of the experience.
    • Sela Pass: A high pass at around 13,700 feet with a sacred lake beside it, snowbound for much of the year, on the road to Tawang.
    • Ziro Valley: Paddy fields and pine hills, home of the Apatani people, and host to the popular Ziro music festival each September.
    • Bomdila: A pleasant town with monasteries and views, and a common overnight halt on the way to Tawang.
    • Dirang: A relaxed valley known for its hot springs and apple orchards.
    • Namdapha National Park: Way out east, a remote park for travellers who are serious about wildlife.

    Permits for Arunachal Pradesh

Everyone needs a permit to enter Arunachal. Indian citizens apply for an Inner Line Permit, which you can get online or through an authorised agent fairly quickly with ID and photos. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, usually arranged through a registered operator and often requiring a small group. Carry several copies either way, because they get checked at a number of points along the road.

Best time to visit Arunachal Pradesh

The best windows are roughly March to May and October to early December, when the skies clear and the roads stay open. Tawang and Sela can get heavy snow in winter, which occasionally shuts the route, though the snow itself is something to see if conditions allow. Skip the monsoon for the high country, since landslides are common. Ziro is at its best in late summer when the fields are green, and around the festival.

    Getting to Arunachal Pradesh

You will usually start in Assam, flying into Guwahati or Tezpur, or taking the train to Guwahati or Naharlagun near Itanagar. From there it is a long, scenic drive into the hills. Tawang in particular is a two-day journey from the plains, so the road becomes part of the trip. Newer airports inside the state are slowly opening things up.

    Planning your Arunachal trip

With long distances, thin infrastructure, and mandatory permits, Arunachal is the one Northeast state where a good local operator really earns their keep. Give it a week or more, either to reach Tawang properly or to combine it with Dirang and Bomdila; Ziro works well as its own gentler loop. A well-run Arunachal tour package sorts the permits, the sturdy mountain vehicles, the experienced drivers, and the stays we have actually tested, which is what makes a remote region feel manageable. For anyone willing to put in the extra travel days, there are few places in India quite like it.

    Questions people ask us

How much does a 7-day Arunachal trip cost?

It depends on the season, hotel category and whether you share a vehicle. Our 7-day Tawang tour shows its per-person starting price on the package page, and we quote exact costs for your dates and group size.

Is Tawang safe for a family trip?

Yes, Tawang is a popular family destination. Plan for the altitude at Sela Pass (13,700 ft), cold evenings and long drives, and keep a buffer day in winter in case snow closes the road.

When does it snow in Tawang?

Snow is most likely from December to February, especially around Sela Pass. March to May and October to November usually have clear skies and open roads.
