Sikkim sits in a tight corner between Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan, and it is one of those places that quietly over-delivers. It was the first state in India to go fully organic, and you notice the care everywhere, from the tidy streets of Gangtok to the empty valleys up north. Big mountain views, old monasteries, high lakes, and some of the warmest hospitality in the region.

    Why go to Sikkim

What we like about Sikkim is how easily it swings between comfortable and wild. One morning you are having coffee on a Gangtok rooftop with the mountains in view; a day later you are standing next to a half-frozen lake at 12,000 feet. The state is small and the roads connect well, and the culture is a real mix of Buddhist, Nepali, and Lepcha traditions.

    Places worth visiting in Sikkim

    • Gangtok: The capital, and an easy base. MG Marg is a clean pedestrian street made for evening strolls, with plenty of short day trips around it.
    • Tsomgo (Changu) Lake and Baba Mandir: A glacial lake at around 12,400 feet, often frozen in winter, on the road up toward Nathula.
    • Nathula Pass: The India-China border point. It needs a permit and is closed on some days, so check before you plan around it.
    • Pelling: Quieter than Gangtok, over in the west, with some of the closest Kanchenjunga views you will get without trekking.
    • North Sikkim: Lachung, Lachen, the Yumthang Valley, and Gurudongmar Lake. This is the part people remember most, and also the part that takes the most planning.
    • Rumtek Monastery: One of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the area, a short drive from Gangtok.

    Permits for Sikkim, explained

You do not need a permit just to enter Sikkim if you are an Indian citizen. But several of the best bits do, including Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, and all of North Sikkim. These are arranged through registered local operators, usually a day ahead, and you will need passport photos and ID copies. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), now applied for online, and cannot visit Nathula, Gurudongmar Lake or Zuluk. Our Sikkim permits guide has the details. The simplest route, honestly, is to let a local operator sort the permits while you focus on the trip.

    Best time to visit Sikkim

March to May is lovely, with rhododendrons out and clear views in the Yumthang Valley. October to mid-December is the other sweet spot, crisp and clear. Winter is cold with snow higher up, pretty but with a real chance that roads to North Sikkim or Nathula close for a while. The monsoon months are green but landslide-prone, so build in extra time if you go then.

    Getting to Sikkim

The closest airport is Pakyong near Gangtok, though Bagdogra, about four to five hours away, has far more flights. New Jalpaiguri is the nearest major railway station. From either, shared and private vehicles run up to Gangtok and beyond. A lot of travellers combine Sikkim with Darjeeling, since they share the same gateways.

    Planning your Sikkim trip

Between the permits, the weather, and the long drives up north, Sikkim is a place where local knowledge genuinely saves you time and trouble. Five to seven days lets you fit in Gangtok, a North Sikkim run, and Pelling without rushing any of it. A good Sikkim tour package handles the permits, the mountain transport, and the stays, which matters most for the remote north. Whether you are on a honeymoon or travelling with the kids, it is an easy place to fall for.

    Sikkim tour packages

Our Sikkim tours start with a pickup at Bagdogra airport or NJP station. Popular options: Gangtok & Pelling sightseeing (5 days), North Sikkim with Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang (6 days), Sikkim honeymoon retreat, luxury Sikkim tour. Questions people ask us

What is the weather like in Gangtok in October?

October is one of the best months to visit: post-monsoon skies are usually clear, days are pleasant and nights are cool, so pack a light jacket. It's also busy with the Puja holidays, so book stays and permits early.

What can you do in Gangtok in 2 days?

Spend one day on Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir (a permit is needed, which we arrange) and the other on Rumtek Monastery, the ropeway, Tashi viewpoint and an evening walk on MG Marg.

What is there to do on MG Marg at night?

MG Marg is a pedestrian-only street lined with cafés, momo shops and handicraft stores. Evenings are for strolling, people-watching and dinner; most shops close fairly early, so go soon after sunset rather than late at night.
