Darjeeling has been pulling travellers up into the hills of northern West Bengal for well over a century, and honestly, it still holds up. People call it the "Queen of the Hills", and once you have watched the morning light hit the mountains with a cup of local tea in hand, the nickname makes sense. It is a mix of old colonial buildings, Tibetan and Nepali culture, steep little lanes, and tea gardens that run right to the edge of town.

    Why go to Darjeeling

The views are the obvious draw. On a clear day Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, sits right there on the horizon. But there is more to the town than one good viewpoint. This is where Indian tea tourism began, the toy train still runs on its narrow-gauge track, and the pace is slow in the best way. It suits families, couples, and solo travellers, and you do not need to be especially fit to enjoy it.

    Places worth visiting in Darjeeling

    • Tiger Hill: The famous sunrise spot. You will be up before dawn and you will not be alone, but watching the sun catch Kanchenjunga is worth the early alarm.
    • The toy train: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO site for good reason. The short joyride past Batasia Loop to Ghum, the highest railway station in India, is the easy way to experience it.
    • Tea gardens: Happy Valley and a few others let you walk through the bushes and see how the first-flush tea everyone raves about is actually made.
    • Ghum Monastery and the Peace Pagoda: Two quiet stops for when you want a break from the crowds.
    • The zoo and HMI: The Padmaja Naidu zoo has red pandas and snow leopards, and the mountaineering institute next door is genuinely interesting if you like that history.
    • Chowrasta and the Mall: The town square. Grab a coffee, sit, and watch the evening go by.

    Best time to visit Darjeeling

You can go almost any time, but the season changes what you get. Spring, roughly March to May, is mild and full of flowers, which is why it is also the busiest. If clear mountain views matter most to you, come in October or November when the skies tend to be cleanest. Winters get cold, sometimes with a dusting of snow up high. The monsoon from June to September turns everything green but brings a real risk of landslides and delays, so keep your plans loose if you travel then.

    Getting to Darjeeling

The nearest airport is Bagdogra, about 70 km below, and the closest big railway station is New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. From either, it is a three to four hour drive up the hills by shared jeep or private cab. Since the gateways are the same, plenty of people pair Darjeeling with Gangtok and a few days in Sikkim.

    A few practical tips

    • Pack layers. Even in summer, mornings and nights are cold.
    • In peak season, book the Tiger Hill trip and any toy-train seats ahead of time.
    • Buy tea from the estates themselves or a shop you trust, so you know what you are getting.
    • Keep a buffer day during the monsoon. The roads here do not always cooperate.

    Planning your Darjeeling trip

Three or four days is usually enough to see the main sights without feeling rushed, and Darjeeling slots in nicely alongside Kalimpong, Mirik, or a crossover into Sikkim. If you would rather not juggle the cabs, stays, and onward permits yourself, that is where a planned Darjeeling tour package helps, and it is the kind of thing we put together often. Family holiday, honeymoon in the tea country, or just a quiet few days in the hills, a little planning takes most of the stress out of it.

    Questions people ask us

How far is Darjeeling from Siliguri?

Darjeeling is roughly 65–75 km from Siliguri, NJP and Bagdogra — about 3 hours by car via Kurseong. The toy train takes far longer and is best enjoyed as a joy ride.

How many days are enough for Darjeeling and Kalimpong?

Four to five days works well: two nights in Darjeeling for Tiger Hill, the toy train and the tea gardens, and two in Kalimpong for Deolo Hill, Durpin Monastery and the flower nurseries.

What is the Darjeeling 3-point tour?

It's the early-morning circuit of Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kanchenjunga, then Ghoom Monastery and Batasia Loop on the way back to town.
