Meghalaya means "abode of clouds", and the name fits. This is green, wet, hilly country in the Northeast, full of waterfalls, clear rivers, and the famous living root bridges that locals have grown by hand over generations. It is also one of the easier Northeast states to travel in. Indian visitors do not need special permits, and the main loop around Shillong and Cherrapunji is well worn.
Why go to Meghalaya
Not many places pack this much into a short drive. Within a couple of hours of Shillong you can trek down to a root bridge, stand at the lip of a huge waterfall, boat on water so clear the boat seems to hang in the air, and poke around limestone caves. The weather stays cool and pleasant, and the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo cultures give the place a character all its own.
Places worth visiting in Meghalaya
- Shillong: The usual base, sometimes called the "Scotland of the East". Ward's Lake, Elephant Falls, and a surprisingly good café and live-music scene.
- Cherrapunji (Sohra): One of the rainiest places on earth, ringed by waterfalls, with Nohkalikai chief among them, plus Mawsmai Cave.
- The Double Decker root bridge at Nongriat: The famous two-tier bridge. Getting there means a steep climb down and back up thousands of steps, but most people say it is the highlight of the trip.
- Dawki: The Umngot River here is so clear it looks almost unreal, and the boat rides near the Bangladesh border are the reason it went viral.
- Mawlynnong: Often called Asia's cleanest village, with its own root bridge and a bamboo viewing tower nearby.
- Mawphlang Sacred Forest: An old protected grove the local community has looked after for centuries.
Best time to visit Meghalaya
For comfortable weather and reliable roads, October to April is the safest bet. Autumn and winter give you clearer skies and easy travel. If you want the waterfalls roaring, though, nothing beats the monsoon from June to September. Just know it comes with heavy rain, thick mist, and the odd landslide. Spring is a nice in-between as the green returns.
Getting to Meghalaya
Most people fly into Guwahati in neighbouring Assam and drive about three hours up to Shillong on a good highway. There is a small airport at Umroi near Shillong, but it has limited flights. Guwahati's strong rail and air links make it the practical gateway, and it is easy to tack on Kaziranga and a bit of Assam if you have the days.
A few practical tips
- The Double Decker trek is no joke. Carry water, wear proper shoes, and start early.
- Dawki and Cherrapunji work best as full-day trips from Shillong, or with a night nearby.
- Be respectful in the villages and sacred forests. These are living communities, not exhibits.
- Phone signal drops out in the valleys, so download your maps before you set off.
Planning your Meghalaya trip
Four to six days covers Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and at least one root-bridge trek at a sensible pace. Distances look tiny on a map, but the mountain roads eat up time, so a realistic plan beats a packed one. A Meghalaya tour package can take care of transport, decent homestays and hotels, and trekking guides, which helps a lot once you leave the main towns. Either way, the place tends to land better than people expect.
Meghalaya tour packages
All our Meghalaya trips start with a pickup in Guwahati and include a private car and driver: the Shillong, Cherrapunji & Dawki tour (5 days), living root bridges trek with a Nongriat homestay (6 days), Assam & Meghalaya tour with Kaziranga (7 days), luxury Meghalaya tour. Questions people ask us
How many days are enough for Meghalaya?
Five to six days covers Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki at a comfortable pace, with a day for the Double Decker root bridge trek. With only three or four days, focus on Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki.
Is Meghalaya safe for solo female travellers?
Many women travel solo in Meghalaya, and Khasi society is matrilineal and welcoming. The usual precautions apply: avoid isolated trails after dark, use registered taxis, and hire a local guide for longer treks.
Can you cross into Bangladesh at Dawki?
Dawki–Tamabil is an official land border, but crossing needs a valid Bangladesh visa and immigration checks — you can't simply cross from the boating area on the Umngot river.
