Kaziranga reopened for the 2026-27 season on 3 October. Since then, the questions we get from guests are mostly practical ones. Which safari should I book? What does it cost? Is it worth taking the elephant ride? This guide answers those, based on the trips we run there every winter.

    When is Kaziranga open?

The park closes every year for the monsoon, from roughly the end of May to late September, when much of it floods. This season the jeep safaris started on 3 October 2026. Elephant safaris usually follow a few weeks later. Reports this year pointed to late October or 1 November, so if the elephant ride matters to you, travel from November onwards.

November to April is the main season. December and January are the busiest months, with foggy mornings. February and March are our favourites. By then the forest department has burnt patches of the tall grass, so you see much more from the jeep.

    Safari timings

Jeep safaris run in two slots. The morning slot starts around 7:30 am and the afternoon slot around 1:30 pm, and each lasts about two hours. Exact times differ slightly from range to range, and the gates are strict, so be there half an hour early.

The elephant safari goes out at first light, before the jeeps, and lasts under an hour. It is the best way to get close to rhinos in the tall grass, and the light at that hour is beautiful for photos.

What does a Kaziranga safari cost?

Jeep safaris are priced per vehicle, and the rate depends on the range. The farther ranges cost more because the drive to the gate is longer. Operator quotes we saw for 2026 were roughly ₹3,700 to ₹4,500 per jeep for Indian visitors, and about double that for foreign nationals. On top of the jeep, you pay a per-person park entry fee, which is higher for foreign visitors, plus a camera fee if you carry one.

Elephant safaris are priced per person and cost more than a jeep seat, again with a higher rate for foreign nationals. Seats are limited, so they sell out first.

The forest department revises fees from time to time, so we confirm the current rate when we book for you. If someone gives you a price that seems far too low, check whether entry fees are included.

    Which range should you choose?

Kaziranga has four ranges for tourists, and each feels different.

    Central range (Kohora)

The most popular and the most dependable. Rhinos, wild buffalo, swamp deer and elephants are common, and it has the most elephant safari slots. If you only have time for one safari, do this one.

    Western range (Bagori)

Open grassland and waterholes, with a very high number of rhinos. It is great for photographs, especially in the afternoon. Elephant safaris run here too.

    Eastern range (Agaratoli)

The birders' range. You see pelicans, storks and waterfowl on the beels, and fewer jeeps. The drive to the gate is longer.

    Burapahar range

The quietest of the four, hillier and more forested. It is worth a go if you have already done Central and Western.

Our usual plan is the elephant safari and an afternoon jeep in Central on day one, then Western the next morning. That covers most of what people come for.

    Will you see a tiger?

Probably not, and we'd rather tell you that now than have you disappointed later. Kaziranga has one of the highest tiger densities in India (according to the state's figures, 104 of Assam's 229 tigers live here), but the grass is tall and the tigers are shy. Rhinos, though, are almost guaranteed. The park holds over 2,600 of them, about nine in ten of all rhinos in Assam.

    How booking works

The forest department sells jeep and elephant safaris, at range booking counters and through its online system. In practice, most visitors book through their lodge or tour operator, who handles the slot, the jeep and the entry tickets in one go. Private cars are not allowed inside the park, so everyone uses the registered safari jeeps.

Booking early matters most for elephant safaris and for December weekends. If you travel with us, all of this is part of the trip.

    Getting there

From Guwahati it is about four and a half to five hours by road. Jorhat airport is closer, at about two hours. Our Kaziranga tours start in Guwahati, which has flights and trains from across India, with a pickup at the airport or station.

    Small things that help

    • Carry the photo ID you booked with. It is checked at the gate.
    • Winter mornings in an open jeep are cold, so wear a jacket, a cap and gloves in December and January. Afternoons are warm.
    • Wear muted colours, and keep your voice down when the driver stops.
    • Bring binoculars. A zoom lens of 200 mm or more makes a big difference for rhinos at a distance.
    • Stay two nights, not one. That gives you three safaris across two ranges without rushing.

    Plan it with us

Our Kaziranga wildlife safari package includes two jeep safaris and one elephant safari, a naturalist, park entry and a resort near the park, starting from Guwahati. For something quieter, the luxury Kaziranga river lodge tour uses private jeeps. And if you want Shillong and Cherrapunji as well, the Assam and Meghalaya tour fits Kaziranga in at the end. Questions people ask us

    Is Kaziranga open now?

Yes. The 2026-27 season opened on 3 October 2026 and runs until the monsoon closure, usually around the end of May.

Which range is best in Kaziranga for rhinos?

Central (Kohora) is the most reliable all-rounder, and Western (Bagori) has very high rhino numbers in open country. Do both if you can.

Can I book the elephant safari online?

The forest department runs online booking, but elephant seats are limited and go quickly. Most visitors book through their lodge or operator, which is often simpler.

How many safaris should I do?

Two or three, spread over two ranges. One elephant safari plus two jeep safaris is the sweet spot for most people.

What is the best month to visit Kaziranga?

February and March for sightings, and November for fewer crowds. December and January are busy and foggy, but still good.
